A brewery that I’ve been meaning to write about for some months, but somehow never got to it, is Donner Creek Brewing in Truckee, California.
Donner Creek –which classes itself as a pico-brewery, meaning that it is smaller than a micro-brewery, and smaller, even, than a nano-brewery– is located in a storefront near a business park just off of Highway 80, on the south side of the freeway.
The outside is pretty nondescript. There’s nothing, really, that call out “brewery!” but once inside you’re greeted with a cozy, friendly, and decidedly relaxed environment. There’s artwork on the walls evocative of the Sierra Nevada mountains surrounding Truckee, a pool table, board games, and plenty of seating options.
When I was there they had a half dozen of their own brews on tap, plus a a few guest beers. (One amusing feature is that the taps seem to be in the production area, as the server disappeared around a wall each time and re-emerged with our beers in hand!)
The beers were solid, and quite enjoyable. Sadly, we arrived shortly before closing time, so I focused on enjoying the brews and did not take notes on what I had. For the same reason, we didn’t get to sample any of their food options –which seem to mostly be options of sausages and grilled sandwiches.
Donner Creek Brewing also offers a very good and varied selection of bottled and canned beers from the area, and around the state and further afield.
